Alan Van Winkle, 57, of Hillsboro, IA, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at his home. Visitation will be held Friday, May 31, 2013, beginning after 12 noon at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1st, at the Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Eis and Pastor Jerry VanHooser officiating. Interment will be at the Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Des Moines County Humane Society or the Henry County Animal Rescue Organization. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. The son of Lewis M. and Hazel M. (Heise) Van Winkle, Alan Deane was born at Henry County Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, IA, on January 18, 1956. He graduated from Burlington Community High School in 1974. He then attended and graduated from Ryder Technical Institute in 1975 and Southeastern Community College Machine Shop Program in 1976. On November 24, 1978, he married Kathryn Louise Horstman at the Bonaparte United Church. Alan completed his apprenticeship as a Tool and Die Maker with Conrad American in 1977 and continued to work for them and Hawkeye Steel Products until November 1990. With a passion to design, Alan started Al's Tool and Design, Inc. in 1987 which he continued to operate until the present. Alan's hobbies included rebuilding a 1929 International Truck previously owned by his father. He liked his Vintage Yamaha Enduros and enjoyed hunting. Alan had many pets which were considered part of his family. A devoted husband and father, Alan was especially proud of his children and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include his wife, Kathy; a son, Lewis; a daughter, Wendy all of Hillsboro, IA; a brother, Rick (Becky) Van Winkle of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a sister, Cheryl (Richard) Bell of Hillsboro, IA; his father-in-law, Harold Horstman of Bonaparte, IA; and a niece and several nephews. Preceding Alan in death were his parents; and his mother-in-law, Joanna Horstman.
