KEOTA-Alice M. George, age 91, of Keota, died Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Halcyon House in Washington.
Alice was born April 29, 1932, in Boone, the daughter of Burton and Alice (Moberly) Simms. She grew up in the Brainerd, Minnesota area and graduated from Lovilia (Iowa) High School. Alice then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College for two years and also took extension courses from the University of Iowa. On March 26, 1953, she married Robert M. George in Lovilia. Alice taught in Clarksville for one year, then in Washington while Robert was in the service. The couple moved to Keota in 1957, where Alice was a substitute teacher for 29 years in the Keota School District and worked with activities for Parkview Manor residents in Wellman. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Keota, where she taught Sunday School and belonged to the Mission Society and Presbyterian Women. Alice also delivered Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed Scrabble, playing cards, watching Wheel of Fortune and reading.
Survivors include two sons: Bob (Cindy) George of Iowa City and Bill George of Kingsville, Texas; two daughters: Sara (Boni) Manzanarez of Farmers Branch, Texas and Nancy (Mark) Gee of Centerville; seven grandchildren: Kristin (Shad) Clayton, Philip (Erica) George, Benjamin George, Elizabeth George, Richard Manzanarez and fiancé Keily, Elizabeth (Jordan) Harvey and Cassandra Gee; eight great grandchildren and two sisters: Doris Laughery of San Diego, California and Ramona Zahn of Webster City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Robert; two sisters: Vera Simms and Laura Simms and two brothers: Burton Simms and Donald Simms.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the United Church of Faith in Keota, with Rev. Cathy Nutting officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.
