Byron Housh

Byron K. Housh, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, July 26, 2013, at his home. Visitation will be held at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, on Monday, July 29, 2013, beginning at 1:00 p.m., where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. A combined funeral for Byron and his wife, Ruth, will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Military rites for Mr. Housh will be accorded by the Henry County Honor Guard. Memorials have been established to Calvary Baptist Church and Hospice of Central Iowa. The son of Glenn Yguera and Lena Marie Guttman Housh, Byron Keith was born in Galesburg, IL, on June 7, 1926. He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He married Ruth Hummell on June 27, 1953, in Mt. Pleasant. They were married for sixty years, before Ruth's death on July 23rd, three days prior to Byron's death. Serving in the United States Army during World War II, Byron was a member of the Rainbow Rangers 222nd Division. In his younger years, Byron worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. He also worked for the A.S.C.S. office inspecting grain bins. For many years, Byron worked as an officer for the Department of Corrections at both the Fort Madison and the Mt. Pleasant facilities until the time of his retirement in the mid-eighties. Byron was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Being mechanically inclined, he liked to work on small appliances. He helped his sons in their activities including grave digging and the mowing of cemeteries. He was a member of the N.R.A. Byron is survived by four children, John (Kim) Housh, Paul (Kelly) Housh, Linda (Harold) McShane, and Cindy (Dan Ross) Carter, all of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a sister, Kathryn Catron of White Salmon, WA; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, Ruth, Byron was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene ; four brothers, Glenn, Dan, Kenton, and Forrest; and four brothers in infancy.
