Homestead-Charles Lloyd Hoehnle was born on September 29, 1938 at his grandparents house in Middle Amana, the son of Jacob and Helene (Hergert) Hoehnle. He was raised in Amana, attending the local schools and graduating from Amana High School in 1957. Charles served in the Army Reserves from 1961-1967. He began working at the Amana Woolen Mill in 1957, working in weaving and eventually becoming the dye house supervisor. Later he worked at the Amana and the Homestead Meat Markets. In retirement, he was a meat cutter for the Ox Yoke Inn, until retiring, again, at the age of 82. He was united in marriage to Barbara Selzer on November 17, 1972 in Homestead. They had two sons, Peter and Sam. Charles had a huge number of hobbies: he was a beekeeper for over sixty years, maintained a large garden and orchard, hunted, trapped, and fished. He enjoyed reading and was an avid sports fan, rooting for the Chicago Cubs. For many years he was active in the Seed Savers Exchange and loved meeting people when he sold his vegetables and fruit at area farmers’ markets. Charles died on Thursday, February 19, 2026 at his home after a brief illness at the age of 87 years.
He is survived by his sons Peter (Elly) Hoehnle and Sam (Justin Deal) Hoehnle; a granddaughter Rose Hoehnle; two step grandchildren; four step great grandchildren and his brother, Jack Hoehnle. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 52 years, Barbara.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at the Middle Amana Church, with Elder Kristie Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the Homestead Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Middle Amana Church. A memorial fund has been established for the Amana Church.
