HARPER-Cletus M. Striegel, age 89, of Harper, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota following a brief illness. Cletus was born August 27, 1915, in Harper, to Antone C. and Mamie (Schumacher) Striegel and graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On April 3, 1945, Cletus married Marjorie Hammes at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in rural Harper. A life-long resident of Harper, Cletus was a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He also began farming in the 1960's. Following his retirement from the post office Cletus sold Crow's Seed Corn until the mid 1990's. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and was a life member of the Knights of Columbus. Cletus also coached Little League and Pony League baseball from 1954 until 1964 and served on the St. Elizabeth Parish Council, St. Elizabeth's school board and Diocesan school board. He enjoyed farming, sports, reading and his family. Survivors include his wife: Marjorie of Harper; five children: Mary Jane Striegel of Marshall, Minnesota, Fr. Robert "Bob" Striegel of Davenport, Dr. David Striegel and wife Terry of Lytton, Rita Ann Krueger and husband Jon of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and Andrew Striegel and wife BeLinda of Harper; 10 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters: Anna Peiffer, Sadie Hammes, Lugardis Osweiler and Teresa Sullivan and four brothers: Lawrence, Clem, Cyril and Dick. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2005, at the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Revs. Marty Goetz and Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the St. Elizabeth Cemetery Fund or the Alzheimer's Association. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
