Daniel Miller, Jr. age 77 of Boerne, Texas, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, June 9, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. He was a beloved man that touched many lives. His life's work was teaching - formally for 33 years. He was a favorite brother, uncle, teacher, adopted 'Texas' dad and mentor to many. For those that were hungry, Dan provided food (barbeque); for those that were thirsty, he provided drink; and for those in need of a safe place, he offered an understanding ear and his home. Dan was a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, friend and spiritual mentor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dan H. and Katie L. Miller, and his brother, Paul D. Miller. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen (Hershberger) Miller, his three children, Jan R. (Tim) Lehman of New Paris, Indiana, James R. (Deb) Miller of San Antonio, Texas and Julie R. (Dave) Nielsen of Bedford, New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Mattie and Ike Lehman, and Katie and Lucas Miller; sisters and brothers, Anna (Evan, deceased) Brenneman of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, (sister-in-law) Grace Miller of Kalona, Iowa, Henry (Ethel) Miller of Kalona, Iowa, Levi (Cora) Miller of London, Ohio, Edwin (Mary Jane) Miller of Kalona, Iowa, Martha (Kent) Shawver of Wichita, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation with family will be Monday, June 18, 2012 from 10:00 A.M.-12:00 Noon with a Memorial Service at 2:00 at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. Burial will be in the Upper Deer Creek Cemetery in rural Wellman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Disaster Service www.mds.mennonite.net to which Dan donated much of his time in retirement, caring for those in need.
