David L. Childers

East Amana- David L. Childers was born January 9, 1941, in Chanute, KS, the son of Lowell and Wilma (Mayfield) Childers. David graduated from Amana High School and then earned his Bachelor's Degree in teaching at the University of Northern Iowa. He worked as a teacher for several plus years early in his life, then worked as a cattleman for Amana Farms, then as a baker for several years followed by being a cook in several Amana restaurants, then was a cook for the Amana High School for 10 years before retiring. He then worked right at home after his wife Shirley passed away to help others in need. David was united in marriage to Shirley F. Bahndorf on August 2, 1958, in the Amanas. David enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, riding horses and spending time with his family. David passed away Thursday, July 3, 2025, at his home in East Amana at the age of 84 years.

David is survived by his three children, Lonny Childers, Lori Ackermann, and Lisa Schneekloth; nine grandchildren, Sherrie, Mathew, Joseph, Elizabeth, Kristin, Justin, John, Kali, and Jake; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 62 years Shirley, Son-in-Law P.J Schneekloth, and siblings Lowell Duane, Dan Eugene, Donald Ray and Shella Kay.

Per David's wishes he will be cremated and a private family graveside will take place Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at the East Amana Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses.
