David E. Schlatter, 70, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA. Open visitation will be on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m., at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, February 29th, at the Memorial Chapel, with Pastors Carl and Elaine Vass of Olds Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been designated for Christian Ville Mission Project in Haiti. Contributions for this memorial may be made to New London Christian Church, which supports the mission project. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. The son of Emerson Daniel and Doris Ruth Ogburn Schlatter, David Eric was born on May 9, 1941, in Henry County. He completed his education in Olds, IA, and was a member of the 1959 graduating class. Following graduation, he attended a trade school for mechanics in Kansas City. He married his high school sweetheart, Joy Louise Deck on October 22, 1960, at Finley Chapel, rural Trenton, IA. She preceded him in death on March 15, 1996. He married Cedra Kay Kaufman in Las Vegas, NV, on July 23, 1996. She survives. After completing his training as a mechanic, David ran the gas station in Olds. When his father died, he took over the family farm and provided for his mother, brother, and sister, along with his wife and small daughter. He has lived on the family farm ever since. David was a skilled carpenter. For many years he was part of the Reschly Construction crew and helped to build many homes and businesses in the area. David was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed each one of their accomplishments. He had several hobbies including using his computer skills to work on his family's genealogy. He used his artistic talents to oil paint and make metal sculptors. David was especially pleased with the Tolander family tree he had made from bailing wire. He and his wife together made over 100 quilts for children at the University of Iowa Hospitals, as well as all family members. Along with his wife, Cedra Kay, David is survived by two daughters, Carol (Steve) Fraise of Montrose, IA and Teresa (Chad) Carnes of Washington, IA; a brother, Emil (Phyllis) Schlatter of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a sister, Maria (friend, John Goedken) Schlatter of Iowa City, IA; and three step-sons, Kevin Kaufman of Davenport, IA, Kent (Beth) Kaufman of West Branch, IA, Kerry (Eutana) Kaufman of Whiting, IA. He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, Amanda, Ray, and Codi Souder, Rachel, Trey, and Raven Carnes, Travis, Marisa, Claire, and Kennedy Kaufman, Stephanie, Dana, Melissa, Lisa, and Kyle Fraise; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Joy Schlatter; and an infant daughter, Nancy Lynn Schlatter.
