Goldfield

Goldfield- Diana Mae Schmidt was born March 19, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of LeRoy J. and Darlene (Novak) Bird.  She was the second oldest out of 5 siblings. She graduated from LaSalle Catholic School in Cedar Rapids in 1969.  After graduating, Diana enjoyed spending time at the Singles Club with her friends; this is where she met her husband. Diana was united in marriage to Robert Dean Schmidt on June 27, 1975 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.  Together they moved to Robert’s family farm west of  Williamsburg where she went from city to farm girl. For the next 20 years she enjoyed driving the tractor, milking cows, caring for the hogs and having all of her nieces and nephews out to the farm. In 1991 they were blessed with their daughter, Theresa. They moved their family to Goldfield in 1995.

Diana had a variety of jobs over her lifetime. She started in her early years working as a clerk at the Lynn County Courthouse, she worked at a bakery making cookies for 5 years, was a waitress, stay at home mom and most recently a phone operator at the Clarion Hospital retiring in 2019.  When Diana wasn’t working she enjoyed helping people and volunteered at many different places including Meals on Wheels, church and school activities. Diana was very proud of volunteering for Hospice for 35+ years. Diana enjoyed reading every romance novel she could find, puzzles, reality TV, playing cards and board games, going to theater, bowling, gardening, crafts, playing the piano, reading the Bible, cuddling her cats and spending time with Robert. Diana passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Iowa Specialty Hospital, in Clarion, Iowa, at the age of 72 years.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Theresa, both of Goldfield; four siblings, Janet Kline, Ron Bird, Mike Bird and Alan (Susan) Bird; sisters-in-law, Joanne Corey, Shirley Schmidt, Linda Schmidt; brother-in-law Dale (Deb) Schmidt; many nieces and nephews and 3 fur babies, her cats that she loved so much.
