Kalona- Dolores Jean Miller was born December 9, 1932, in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Samuel T. and Mary J. (Bender) Miller. Dolores passed away Monday, July 13, 2026 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 93.
Dolores lived her entire life in the Kalona community. She graduated from Iowa Mennonite School in 1950. On October 15, 1953 she was united in marriage to Quinten Henry Miller at East Union Mennonite Church. Dolores was a charter member of Kalona Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, sponsored Torch Bearers, and was president of the WMSC. She provided a home for a number of High Aim students attending IMS. Later she and Quinten volunteered at Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas for nine months. They also served with MCC for four months at Ten Thousand Villages in Akron, PA. Dolores cooked for the Kalona Rotary Club for 21 years. She was a sales clerk for Willow Creek, The Village Shoppe and Unto Others. Dolores enjoyed the many guests who came through her door, loved to garden, travel and visit family. She embroidered many tea towels and created beautiful quilts. She was always there when help was needed, living out her faith in the work of her hands.
Dolores is survived by: four children: Mary Joanna (Paul) Long of Pelham Alabama, Myrna Jane (Dirk) Eitzen of Lititz, PA, Sharla Lynne (Tom) Zasadny of Walker, IA and Forrest Gene (Nora) Miller of Newton, KS.; 18 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren; She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Quinten in 2018, a son George Stuart Miller, a grandson Avery Miller, brother Cletus Miller, and sister three sisters; Arvilla Flisher, Darlene Logan and Loretta Kauffman.
A Celebration of Life Service will be 4:00 pm Sunday, July 19, 2026 at Kalona Mennonite Church, Kalona, Iowa. Burial will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 pm Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established for Hillcrest Academy, Hesston College or Goshen College.
