SIGOURNEY-Donald E. Gilliland, age 70, of Sigourney, passed away Friday August 6, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City. He was born December 16, 1939 in Hayesville, Iowa to Holland and Grace (Wallerich) Gilliland and graduated from Sigourney High School In 1959. He served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964 where he was stationed in Germany in the Artillery. He returned home and was employed with the Milwaukee Railroad for several years. He then was employed by the City of Sigourney for 25 years, retiring in 2002. During his retirement he enjoyed fishing, talking on the phone, and being with friends and family. He was active in the American Legion post #19, the Sigourney Lions Club and volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels. He is survived by 5 daughters Marsha Gilliland of Burlington, Maggie Davis (adopted) of Tipton, Holly Phelps of Sigourney, Hettie (Eric) Lehart of Albia, Heidi (Adam) Bernard of Iowa City and 3 grandsons: Brenden Ray Lahart, Camden Reed Lahart and Gabriel Allen Bernard. Also surviving are two sisters Bonnie Joan Gorsh of Wheatland and Joyce Hahn of Sigourney and one brother David (Barb) Gilliland of Oskaloosa. Preceding him in death were his parents and 2 brothers-in-law. Upon Donald's request he was cremated. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 20, 2010, at Pennington Cemetery in rural Sigourney. There will be no visitation.
