Doris V. Combs, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Sunday, May 01, 2011, at the Henry County Health Center. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Thursday, May 5th, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, of Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m., on Friday, May 6th, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at the Richwood Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Mrs. Comb's memory. Born November 23, 1925, in Wilbur, NE, Doris Virginia was the daughter of Albert and Julia (Day) Gilbert. While still an infant, her family moved to Elk Point, SD, where she spent her formative years and graduated from high school in 1942. In 1943, she moved to California to be near her boyfriend, Charles Howard Davis who was stationed in the military there. The couple married, but later divorced. On November 22, 1952, Doris married Earl Frederick Combs in Yuma, AZ. He preceded her in death on February 15, 2002. Following her marriage to Fred, the couple returned to Iowa, where Doris worked at the Triangle Caf at Ainsworth Junction and the Ainsworth State Bank. In 1963, the Combs moved to Mt. Pleasant, where Doris was employed as a waitress at The Iris Restaurant. Two years later, Doris began an extensive career as a bank teller for the Henry County Savings Bank. She retired from the Firstar Bank after 23 years of service. For the next eight years, the couple lived in McAllen, TX, and then returned to Mt. Pleasant in 1998 to be near their family. Doris was known as a great cook to her family and friends. She also enjoyed growing flowers such as African violets and her favorite flower, tulips. In recent years, Doris lived at Sunnybrook Assisted Living, making many new friends, participating in many activities and especially found pleasure in playing Bingo and making crafts. Mrs. Combs is survived by two daughters, Neena (Todd) Fellows of Croton, IA, and Sheri Roberge of Brea, CA; four grandchildren, Malynda (Derek) Mason, Tony (Brandy) Jones, Jennifer (Darwin) Johnson, and Brandon (Amanda) Frank; and ten great-grandchildren. Along with her loving husband, Fred, Doris was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters and two brothers.
