Doris Ilene Barker was born April 28, 1923, in Linton, Indiana, the daughter of Rinaldo and Vianna Wools. She grew up in Dugger, Indiana, and after her high school graduation, she moved with her family to northeast Indiana, to look for work. While there, she met Emery Eugene Barker. They were united in marriage in Henderson, Kentucky on December 3, 1947, and made their home in Griffith, Indiana. Doris worked for a time at Smith Victor, in Griffith, until 1953, when they adopted a baby, Marsha Ann. She kept busy being a fulltime mother and was an avid gardener, seamstress, knitter and crochet expert. Doris belonged to the First Christian Church in Griffith, Indiana, and was very active in teaching and youth leadership roles, as well as a choir member. In 2010, she and her husband moved to Brooklyn to be closer to family. Her family was her focus and remained that most of her life.
A very special thank you to the staff at Brooklyn Community Estate for the many years of loving care they gave Doris.
