Doris Maxine Riess, age 92, died following a brief illness on Friday, September 24, 2004, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Her body was cremated. A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 30, 2004 at the North English Christian Church with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. . A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church, the North English Library and Dollars for Scholars. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. Doris Maxine Riess was born on December 30, 1911, in North English, IA, the daughter of George W. And Genette (Nettie) Gilchrist Roller. She grew up in North English and graduated from North English High School. She attended both Drake University and received her BA Degree from William Penn College. Doris was united in marriage to Harold W. Riess on June 7, 1938 in North English. He preceded her in death in February 1966. Doris taught a total of 28 years in rural schools (including Gritter School near North English) and at English Valleys Elementary School in North English. She retired in 1979. She was a lifetime member of the North English Christian Church, a 50year member of the Rebekah Lodge, a member of the Retired Teachers, and the international honorary teachers society, Delta Kappa Gamma. Doris became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in July 2003. She is survived by Sons: John M Riess and wife Kathryn of Crystal Rock, CO and James H. Riess of Conroy, IA; a daughter Janet Lee Riess of Westminister, CO; 5 grandchildren; and a niece Frances Bair of North English. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law Nancy Riess; sisters Fannye Mullin, Lita LaVelle, Helen Geiger, Mabel Ellett, Margaret Long and an infant brother.
