Doris Schlatter

Doris R. Schlatter, 98, of rural Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Sunday, February 19, 2012, at her son's home. Open visitation will be held from 12 noon until 6 p.m., on Wednesday, February 22nd, at the Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Thursday, February 23rd, at the Memorial Chapel, with The Reverend Joseph Phung officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Operation Smile and The Fellowship Cup. Born April 4, 1913, in Aurora, IL, Doris Ruth was the daughter of Dr. Burt and Nellie Isaacson Ogburn. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. She taught school at Charter Oak and Crawford Country Schools in Henry County. Several years later Doris returned to Iowa Wesleyan College and graduated in 1952, with a degree in English. On May 15, 1938, Doris married Emerson Schlatter at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City, IA. He preceded her in death on February 8, 1963. Following her marriage to Emerson, Doris became a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm. She was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Excelling as a seamstress, Doris was also an excellent quilt maker known for her fine stitching. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and oil painting. One of her oil paintings is on display at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Mt. Pleasant. Doris is survived by two sons, David (Cedra) Schlatter and Emil (Phyllis) Schlatter, both of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a daughter, Maria (friend, John Goedken) of Iowa City, IA; a sister Helen Neuweg of West Point, IA; a brother, Dale Blacksmith of New Braunfels, TX; four grandchildren, Carol (Steve) Fraise, Darin (Megan) Schlatter, Teresa (Chad) Carnes, and Douglas Schlatter; three step-grandchildren, Kevin Kaufman, Kent (Beth) Kaufman, and Kerry (Eutanta) Kaufman; and a sister-in-law, Irene Ogburn of Mayville, ND. Doris is also survived by two additional generations of grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Oldfather; two brothers, Donald Ogburn and Herbert Blacksmith; a daughter-in-law, Joy Louise Schlatter; a granddaughter, Nancy Lynn Schlatter; a great-grandson, Randall Douglas Schlatter; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Blacksmith and Alice Blacksmith; and two brothers-in-law, Albert Neuweg and Lynn Oldfather.
