Edward G. Comfort, 99, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Arbor Court Nursing Home in Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Comfort's body has been cremated. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. Born June 22, 1912, in Snedekerville, PA, Edward Gerald was the son of Ayerie and Hazel (Woodward) Comfort. He was the oldest of ten children in the family and was the last surviving one. On July 22, 1933, he married Mabel E. Brown in S. Otselic, NY. She survives. In his early years, Mr. Comfort worked in a saw mill and a fish hatchery. The family moved to Elmira, NY, in 1940, where he began an extended career as a long haul truck driver for more than 40 years. Upon his retirement, Edward and Mabel moved to Florida. In 2006, the couple moved to Mt. Pleasant, to be closer to family. Mr. Comfort was a long-time member of Southside Baptist Church in Elmira, NY, and was an ordained deacon in a Southern Baptist church in Florida. He was an active member of the Teamsters Union. His leisure activities included fishing, bowling and card playing. He taught his sons to play chess and checkers. Survivors include his wife of 79 years; three sons, the Rev. Charles (Patricia) Comfort of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Phillip R. Comfort and David R. (Patricia) Comfort of Kokomo, IN; one daughter, Beverly Coss of Jacksonville, FL; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-five great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren.
