South English – Edward Mahlon Hervey, 72, passed away peacefully on Monday October 30, surrounded by loved ones. Ed was born January 14, 1951, in Sigourney, Iowa, to Elroy William & Amy Beatrice (Claypool) Hervey. He graduated from English Valleys High School in 1969. Following high school, Ed served in the United States Army from February 17, 1971 to November 15, 1972. Throughout his life he worked for the South English and North English Telephone offices, worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and various stores within the Williamsburg Outlet Mall. Ed retired in 2021 and spent his time enjoying gardening, taking care of his yard, gathering with friends for breakfast and helping out those in need. Ed didn’t know a stranger. To meet him, was to know him and become a friend. His family looked to him as a steadfast leader, and he was a pillar of strength to them and their community. Ed was a member of hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney and the Ross T Hadley American Legion Post #488 in North English.
On June, 30, 1973, Ed was united in marriage to Cheryl Kay Klipp, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. They loved each other deeply and together, they raised three children, Michael, Cindy and Brande. This past summer, Ed and his bride celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary among many friends and family.
Ed had many passions throughout his lifetime. He was very proud of his time serving in the United States Army. He brought together his fellow Veterans annually for Color Guard to lead the North English Fun Days parade and on April 19, 2022 he was placed on the #42 Honor Flight to Washington DC. Ed was accompanied by his daughter Brande who will forever remember the humbling experience of being immersed in the memories and stories of those who bravely gave their time for our country and to protect our freedom. Upon his return he had the honor of receiving the Quilt of Valor for his love of his Country.
Anyone who knew Ed well, knew that he was a kind and generous man. He loved his family fiercely and made everyone he met feel welcome with his warm demeanor, hearty laugh and beaming smile. He was a patient and loving father. Grandfather, great-grandfather and husband.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl of South English; son Michael (Denise) Hervey of Woodruff, Wisconsin; two daughters Cindy Menke (Chad) of Harper and Brande Hervey (Steve) of Wilton; Five grandchildren Christopher (Alexandra) Nor, Kristina (Ryan) Wieland, Sam Menke, Haylee Lehman and Morgan Lehman; three great grandchildren Theo Wieland, Dashiell Nor and Bryce Nor; two brothers Lyle Hervey and Daryl (Maxine) Hervey; and a sister Virginia (Dick) Swanson.
