Elizabeth A. Hookom, 92 of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center. Friends may sign the register book during normal business hours at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel on Friday, August 3, 2012. A private committal service will be held on Friday at the Forest Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends for food and fellowship on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Wesley Chapel rural Mt. Pleasant. Memorials have been established to Wesley Chapel and Henry County Health Center Auxiliary. Born July 13, 1920 in Wheatland, Wyoming, Elizabeth Ada was the daughter of Walter Craig and Ada (Becker) Lemon. On August 25, 1946 she married Jeems Allison Hookom in New London, Iowa. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1972. Elizabeth and Jeems farmed in the New London and Mt. Pleasant area. She also worked part time, then full time, as a night supervisor at Henry County Memorial Hospital for 35 years. Elizabeth graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Iowa in 1941. She worked in doctors' offices and private duty until she enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps in 1944. Training at Fort Carson, Colorado, she shipped to England where she served in an evacuation hospital. She was also assigned work in Germany and France. Elizabeth was honorably discharged in 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant. Active in many community organizations, Elizabeth was a former member of the Red Cross Board of Henry County, Business and Professional Women, Henry County Nurses Association, VFW Post #2561 and the Auxiliary, and American Legion Post #58 and the Auxiliary. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. A wonderful mother and grandmother, Elizabeth is survived by her children Thomas Hookom of Mt. Pleasant, Judith (Linwood) Miller of Mt. Pleasant, Janice Levsen of Bettendorf, and Karol (Roy) Ross of Mt. Pleasant; five grandchildren, Tom (Angie) McGehearty, Laura Miller, Jennifer Miller, Kathryn (Mark) Miller, and Nicholas Levsen; and a great granddaughter, Addison McGehearty. She is also survived by one sister, Marjorie Hudgens of Davenport; and many nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Jeems, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Ruth Margaret Totemeier.
