North English-Emma Mae Campbell was born December 25, 1934, at her home in rural Garrison, Iowa, the daughter of John and Elsie (Hinkle) Sturtz. She was baptized at St. Martin’s Church, rural Marengo in 1951. She graduated from Norway High School. Emma worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids. Emma was united in marriage to Mitchell Franklin Campbell on October 27, 1957 at St. Martin’s Church near Marengo, Iowa. The couple lived in Missouri before making their home near Homestead, Iowa for many years. Emma helped on the farm while raising three boys and being a housewife. In 1999 they moved to North English. Emma enjoyed her flowers, plants, love of birds (especially the cardinal), her pretty dishes, collecting knick knacks and browsing in antique stores. She liked to go to the casino occasionally and enjoyed a good trip to Pizza Ranch for mashed potatoes with cottage cheese on top and of course the chicken. She was a devoted wife and mother, with her greatest love being her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, which she spoiled with lots of cookies, Coke and Root Beer floats were her specialty. Emma was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Due to health issues she became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in February of 2024. Emma passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the English Valley Care Center at the age of 89 years.
She is survived by her three sons, Duaine (Lori) Campbell of North English, Dayle (Kelli) Campbell of Lone Tree and Darrell (Emily) Campbell of Homestead; six grandchildren, Dustin (Amanda) Campbell, Lindsay (Stu) Plecker, Jacob Ginneberge-Campbell , Alex Campbell, Carly Campbell and Cady Campbell; two great grandchildren, Emma Lynn and Mason Plecker; a sister, LaVonne Karsten of Marengo and a brother Delbert (Diane) Sturtz of Cedar Rapids along with a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2013, a grandson Nathan Campbell and a brother Larry Sturtz.
A celebration of life service will be 10:30 am on Friday, July 19, 2024, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be 2:30 pm on Friday at the Garrison Cemetery in Garrison. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for the English Valley Care Center, St. Paul Lutheran Church or Essence of Life Hospice. Messages and tributes may be directed to www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
