Gary Alan McDermott, age 63, of South English died at his home after a long illness on Friday, September 24, 2004. A Celebration Of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Rev. Jim Bringman officiating. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Monday, September 27th from 4 pm to 8 pm.. Burial of the ashes will be in the Yankee Point Cemetery near North English. A memorial fund has been established for the South English or What Cheer QRS. Gary was born on February 17, 1941 near what Cheer, IA, the son of Owen Thomas and Olive Beasley McDermott. He attended school in What Cheer and in the Quad Cities. Gary was in the US Navy from 1960 to 1964 and served in the Mediterranean region and during the Cuban missile crisis. He worked at the John Deere Foundry and Frank's Foundry in the Quad Cities, at Louis Rich, Kingsbury Homes, Amana Refrigeration and for the past 10 years at Williamsburg Manufacturing. Gary was united in marriage to Jacki K. Garringer on January 24, 1990 in Brooklyn, IA. They lived a short time in What Cheer before moving to South English in 1991. Gary loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, raising and caring for his animals, playing cards and fishing. He was a member of the Moline American Legion Post # 246 and the Oskaloosa VFW. Gary is survived by his wife Jacki McDermott of South English, daughters: Laurie (Steve) Forgie of Moline, IL and Julie (Mike) Gehn of Port Byron, IL; 5 grandchildren: Eli & Erin Gehn, Brent, Brianne & Troy Forgie; a brother Monte McDermott of Golden, IL; and sisters: Karen (Jack) Pulford of Chandler, AZ; Louinda Benson of Scottsdale, AZ; Charlotte Merman of Morgan, TX; Betty (John) Schlomer of Eagle River, AK and Tane (Wes) Temple of Quincy, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Jayme Alan McDermott and a brother Thomas McDermott.
