Gary Gregory

March 1, 1951 — January 16, 2023

Williamsburg

Williamsburg-Gary Dennis Gregory was born March 1, 1951 in Morehead, Kentucky. The son of Dennis and Faye (Cox) Gregory Jr., he graduated from Crestview High School in Ashland, Ohio in 1969. Gary was united in marriage to Mary Jo Jones on August 29, 1975 in Shelby, Ohio. Gary was a steelworker all his life, working for AK Steel in Mansfield until he retired in 2000. He was a proud and loyal member of the United Steelworkers Local 169. They lived in Shelby until 2008 when they moved to Williamsburg, Iowa. When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting, camping and woodworking. Throughout his life he continued to enjoy collecting and trading knives and guns. However, the most important thing was his family—especially his grandkids.

Gary died Monday, January 16, 2023 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 71. In one of his final conversations with his daughter, he laughed and said, "Hell, Sis! If I'da known I was gonna live this long I would'a taken better care of myself!" He was preceded in death by his parents and by one grandchild, Harley Gregory.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Jo; children, Anna (Byron) Miller, Charles Gregory, Laura (Augie) Sinn, DJ (Jami) Gregory and Colton Hench; 10 grandchildren, Haley Gregory, Quentin Powers, Romney Gregory, Brayden Gregory, Vince Gregory, Elizabeth Hughes, Cam Gregory, Aubrey Sinn, Chase Sinn and Sydney Gregory; a great grandchild and a brother, Keith (Rita) Gregory.

Per his wishes, there will not be a service. Anyone who knew Gary knows he said exactly what he thought. He made it very clear that, "Anyone who wants to see me better do it while I'm alive. They're not gawking at me when I'm dead." His family will celebrate his life privately at a later date. Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg is caring for Gary’s family.
