Eugene Fred Bartachek was born May 26, 1932, on a farm north of Brooklyn, the son of Fred Morris Bartachek and Mildred Lenora Slaymaker Bartachek. He attended the Brooklyn schools and graduated with the Class of 1950. He and Shirley Goodrich were united in marriage on April 28, 1951. Gene worked with his father and uncle doing earth moving, tiling and grading for several years. He owned and operated Bartachek Tiling and Earthmoving from 1959 until his retirement in 2016. His son John partnered with him in this business. He also worked various other jobs, including driving bulk milk trucks, and working at the DX gas station. Gene was a perfectionist and his reputation reflected that. He was a volunteer fireman, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn, and the Farm Bureau. He especially enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, and spending time with his family and friends. In 1963, Gene built their home on Jackson Street with the help of many family members.
