KEOTA-Gene Baumert, age 84, of Keota, died Friday, March 27, 2026, at his home.
Gene was born September 17, 1941, in Iowa City, the son of Floyd and Pearl (Brock) Baumert. He graduated from Keota High School in 1960, then served in the United States Navy from 1963 until 1969, where he was stationed in the Philippines and Washington, D.C. Gene then returned to Iowa and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1970, with a BA. He worked as a payroll/cost accountant for American Cyanamid Company in Hannibal, Missouri, American Home Products Corp., Wyeth and Pfizer, Inc. for 24 years before retiring in 1994. Gene was a member of the United Church of Faith and the American Legion. He was dedicated to family. Gene lovingly cared for his mother, Pearl and his sister, Norma at their family home in Keota. He was a brother like no other to all of his 14 siblings. With no children of his own, Gene became the adored uncle of his many nieces and nephews, as well as his grands and greats that are still adding to their numbers. His wonderful stories and enduring love will be forever treasured.
Survivors include two sisters Margaret Burk of Bucklin, Missouri and Loretta Streigle of Sigourney; and two brothers Dennis Baumert of Keota and Larry Baumert of Marion. He was preceded by his parents and ten siblings Dorothy Dorsey, Donald Baumert, Howard Baumert, Harry Baumert, Marilyn Van Fleet, Darlene Streets, Duane Baumert, Norma Baumert, Glen Baumert, and Paul Baumert.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Pastor Doug Tinnes officiating. The service will also be live streamed on the Powell Funeral Home facebook page. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery, with military rites by Keota V.F.W. Post #4716. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
A memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Gene and his family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
