Gladys McGohan

Gladys Lucile McGohan, 98, of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa died Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Park Place Elder Care in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel Saturday, April 11, 2015. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating. Memorials have been established to the to the Mt. Pleasant Public Library, the Henry County Heritage Trust, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Gladys' long heritage in Henry County dates back to the 19th century, when her ancestors farmed and ran small businesses in the northern part of the county. Born April 13, 1916, in Henry County, Gladys was the daughter of Edna (Hooper) and Clarence Gillaspey. She graduated from Olds High School in 1933 and the Thompson School of Cosmetology in 1936. During her high school years she worked in her familys business in Olds. Later she was employed as a beautician in West Liberty and Mt. Pleasant. On February 26, 1939 Gladys married Lester McGohan. In early marriage they lived on a farm east of Mt. Pleasant. In 1943 they moved to her parents farm west of Swedesburg, where they lived for 45 years. Gladys did the bookkeeping for their farming operation. In 1988 Gladys and Les retired to Arbor Village in Mt. Pleasant. They wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 15 years. She and Les also traveled to many countries around the world, primarily related to farm tours. In 2007 they moved to Sunnybrook Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. Les died in 2008. Gladys is survived by one son, Bill (Linda) McGohan of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one daughter, Betty (Richard) Winga of Minneapolis, MN; four grandchildren, Jeff (Nancy) McGohan of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Marci (Roberto) Fabrega of Minneapolis, MN, Justin (Betsy) Winga of Manitowoc, WI, and Greg (LaDonna) McGohan of Rochester, MN; eight great-grandchildren, Ethan and Elijah McGohan of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Emelia and Catalina Fabrega of Minneapolis, MN, Maxwell and Zachary Winga of Manitowoc, WI, and Lily and Alex McGohan of Rochester, MN.; one sister, Margaret (A.E.) Green of Bonita Springs, FL; one sister-in-law, Jean Gillaspey of Des Moines, IA; as well several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Gladys was preceded in death by a stillborn son, her parents, and one brother, Robert Gillaspey.
