SIGOURNEY-Hazel Louise Ward, age 86, of Sigourney, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa following a brief illness. Hazel was born February 17, 1919, in Arbela, Missouri, the sixth of eleven children of Gim and Maude Adams. The family moved to a farm at Farson, Iowa, and she received her education there. In 1938 she married George Nason in Ottumwa. They were later divorced. In 1959 she married Ralph Ward in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple moved to Sigourney in the early 1960's, where they owned and operated Hazel's, originally off the square then later at a location on the square. In 1973 they moved to Fremont, where they owned the Cozy Corner Café until Ralph's passing in 1981. Hazel then returned to Sigourney. She had lived in Windsor Place since 2002. Survivors include two daughters: Linda DeGroot of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Barbara Gilliland and husband David of Oskaloosa; two grandddaughters: Diane DeGroot of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Cynthia Thompson of Keota; two grandsons: Greg DeGroot of Belton, Missouri and Jeff Nason of Harper; six great grandchildren; three sisters: Ruth Burns of Grass Valley, California, Jessie Christy of Cedar Rapids and Betty Smith of Gladstone, Missouri and one daughter-in-law: Linda Nason of Harper. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ralph, two sons, James and Paul Nason, son-in-law, Glenn DeGroot, granddaughter: Sue Ellen Decker and seven siblings. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Jim Stout officiating. Burial will be at Fremont Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time on Friday at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
