Helen Zihlman, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, IA passed away, Thursday, October 15, 2015, at Pleasant Manor Care Center.The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will follow beginning at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor David Saltzman officiating. Interment will be in North Hill Cemetery. A memorial has been established to North Hill Cemetery. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com.Born August 27, 1925 in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Helen Lucille was the daughter of Malvin and Helen (Sandall) Barquist. She lived in the Olds, IA area as a child, and she graduated in 1943 from Olds Consolidated High School. She was confirmed in faith at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. On March 31, 1946, she married Dwight Zihlman at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on January 25, 1988.After high school, Helen worked for the Olds Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. Upon her marriage to Dwight, she became a devoted farm wife.Helen was very family oriented. She greeted everyone with a warm smile, a great sense of humor, and a helping hand. She loved spending time with her family, and she travelled a number of times to California to visit with relatives. An angel food cake, baked by Helen, would always be available at family birthdays. She played piano duets with her sister. A favorite hobby was gardening. She was a member of Wayland Mennonite Church. Survivors include two children, Diane (Richard) Nicholson and Steven (Charlotte) Zihlman all of Mt. Pleasant, IA; six grandchildren, David (Bridgette) Nicholson, Karen (Chad) Drury, Kevin (Jessica) Nicholson, Brian (Sarah) Zihlman, John (Theresa) Zihlman, and Angela (Adam) Williamson; and nine great grandchildren.Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Dwight; a sister, Lois Saltzman; and a grandchild, Karole Nicholson.
