Herbert W. Nicholls was born December 2, 1919 in Macon County, near Decatur, Illinois to Earl O. And Myrtle Ellen (Leonard) Nicholls. He grew up in Decatur, Illinois and graduated from high school there. On February 16, 1941, he married Betty Ann Walther in St. Charles, Missouri. The couple moved to Garner, Iowa in 1947. Herbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II. They then moved to Thornton, Iowa before making their home in Wellman in 1953. . Herbert raised turkeys for Baxter Freese at Rolling Acres for 24 years. In 1977 they moved to Iowa City, retiring in 1982. They returned to Wellman in 1987. Herb was a former Cub Scout leader, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Bible Friends Sunday School class. He was also a member and Past Master of the Dayton Masonic Lodge, Washington Consistory, Kaaba Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Patron. Herbert died Saturday, June 19, 2004, with complications of Alzheimers disease, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 17 days. Survivors include his wife-Betty of Wellman; five children-Jerry W. Nicholls and wife Judy of Coralville, Anne L. Nicholls of Wellman, Donald E. Nicholls and wife Judy of Creston, Michael R. Nicholls and wife Priscilla of North Liberty and Julia E. Stephens of Buckner, Missouri; 19 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; three brothers: Edgar (Pete) Nicholls of Decatur, Illinois : Roger Zollars of Phoenix, Arizona and Jack Zollars of Lancaster, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Merville, Dean and Robert. Celebration of life services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman with Rev. Richard Pippert officiating. Burial is in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation is at the Powell Funeral Home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a Masonic Service at 8:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Asbury United Methodist Church and the Wellman Senior Center.
