Houan Cam

Houan Cam, 67, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, November 06, 2009, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, November 14th at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Regan Stoops and Lo Vanh Nachiengane officiating. Cremation will be accorded following the service. Burial will be at a later date in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church. The son of Tinh and Hai (Lo) Cam, Houan was born April 20, 1942, in Ban Bo An Meuang La, Sonla Vietnam. On June 20, 1961 he married Quang Lo in Ban Nong Penh, Laos. Before coming to the United States, Houan worked for the United Nations Embassy. He brought his family to America in February of 1980. After moving to the United States, Houan worked for Heatilator in Mt. Pleasant for one year and then the Heinz Corporation in Muscatine. For the following twenty years, he worked for Goodyear Rubber and Hose Company in Mt. Pleasant. Houan became a United States citizen in 1990. Houan loved being with his large family. He was an accomplished photographer and videographer and enjoyed traveling, hunting, and fishing. He had a tremendous sense of humor and loved to tease people. Houan played the pee-pup flute and loved listening to music. He was an active member in Society for Thaidam American Friendship and Laos Friendship Association of Southeast Iowa. Along with his wife, Quang, Houan is survived by five sons, Cody (Joy) Cam of Cedar Rapids, IA, Phouth (Tina) Cam of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Teui (Nina) Cam of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Sone (Kimberly) Cam of Ankeny, IA, and Sang Cam of Des Moines, IA; a godson, Arnie (Khampoun) Vilayphone of Cedar Rapids, IA; and three daughters, Nouane (Vinny) Baccam of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Nikki Cam of Urbana, IL, and Neuane (Will Babin) Cam-Babin of Denver, CO. Along with 22 grandchildren and a great-grandchild, he is also survived by two sisters, Thouane Cam of France and Phing Dun of Mt. Pleasant, IA; three brothers, Thu Cam and Thoan Cam of Sonla, Vietnam, and Phoung Cam of Australia. Houan was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Thu Vi; and a brother, Tiane Cam.
