Hugh O'Meara

Hugh Ignatius O’Meara, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Born September 5, 1934, in rural Iowa County to Michael J. and Agnes (Berry) O’Meara, Hugh was the sixth of seven children.

Hugh was a lifelong farmer and a devoted steward of the land. He also attended Creighton University. He served in the United States Army, while in the Army at Fort Sill, OK he played baseball. On February 12, 1983, Hugh married Irene (Fant) Wetjen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Together, they shared a life built on family, hard work, and a deep love for the land they cared for. Farming was more than a career to Hugh—it was his way of life. He understood the value of hard work, patience, and perseverance, and he took great pride in caring for the land and livestock. He believed farms should be cared for, respected, and left better for the next generation. From planting and harvesting to maintaining fences, buildings, and fields, Hugh gave the farm his time, energy, and heart. He knew farming required long days, early mornings, unpredictable weather, and plenty of patience, but he would not have traded that life for anything. His love of farming extended beyond the fields. Hugh was proud of the farms he and Irene owned and of the opportunities they provided for their family, especially their grandchildren. To Hugh, a farm was much more than acres and buildings—it was a legacy, a responsibility, and a way of life. Those who knew Hugh will remember his strong work ethic, determination, quiet pride, and deep connection to the farm. He taught by example, showing those around him the importance of working hard, taking care of what has been entrusted to you, and leaving something better for those who follow.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Irene, and his children, Sean (Mary) Wetjen and Mary (Sid) Greiner; grandchildren, Richard (Kaylin) Wetjen, Charlotte Wetjen, Stetsen (Katherine) Greiner, Sterling Greiner, and Sawyer Greiner; great-grandson, Boyd Richard Wetjen; sisters, Mary Agnes Wagner and Helen Gaffey; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Donald, Clement, William (Bill), and Cyril; and nieces and nephew Mary Jean, Colleen, Carrie, Christie, and Mick.

Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am on Friday, September 11, 2026, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be Thursday, September 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
