Kalona- Jack Dwight Martin was born November 29, 1927 in Clarke County, Iowa to James and Beulah (Blair) Martin. The family later moved to Newton, Iowa, where Jack spent his childhood and most of his adult life. After graduating from Newton High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy, stationed in Saipan and Guam.
On April 8, 1949, he was united in marriage to Darlene Nearmyer at the First Baptist Church in Newton. Jack worked at Maytag Company as a Tool Engineer for 42 years. He served as pastor at Living Word Church of Des Moines for 12 years. In 1995, he and Darlene moved to Kalona to be a part of the Shiloh Church, where he volunteered for 20 years.
Music has always been an important part of Jack’s life. In high school, he was involved in glee club, mixed chorus, orchestra, and a local jazz dance combo. He was also active in his church as a choir director, soloist, and worship leader. He recorded a CD of piano music, including three of his original songs.
Jack passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026 at Pleasantview in Kalona due to dementia from Alzheimer’s disease. The family would like to thank Iowa City Hospice, Pleasantview staff, & volunteers for their compassionate care & support.
Preceding Jack in death were his beloved wife, parents, and infant son, Stephen. Surviving him are daughters: Denise (Doug) Wood of Ames & DeAnne Hellyer of Lexington, KY; grandchildren: Bradley (Cate) Braymen of Washington; Nathan (Sheba) Braymen of Ankeny; Brooke (Dennis) Bowsher of Colorado Springs, CO; & Ryan Hellyer of Indianapolis, IN; and nine great grandchildren.
Jack’s Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm on September 5, 2026 at Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona with visitation beginning at 1 pm. Burial will immediately follow at Nutmeg Cemetery, 1350 Nutmeg Avenue in Kalona.
