SIGOURNEY-Mr. James W. "Bill" Patterson died November 27, 2004, at Brighton Gardens in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he had lived for one year, moving here from Iowa City, Iowa, where he resided from 1987 until 2003. Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2004, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home in Greensboro, North Carolina, with Reverend Hall Partrick officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 6, 2004, at Mt. Zion Cemetery near Martinsburg, Iowa. Bill was born in Hedrick, Iowa, on November 8, 1926. He grew up in Sigourney, Iowa, and was active in basketball, football, and band. He served two tours of duty in the Marine Corps. After graduating from the University of Iowa in 1954, he went to work for Travelers Insurance Co. in Des Moines, Iowa. He started as a claim adjuster and then went to the Hartford, Connecticut, office in 1962. He was there until 1972, transferred to Denver, Colorado, as a claims manager for three years, Walnut Creek, California, for five years, and then to Greensboro for seven years. His parents, grandparents, and one sister, Patricia, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, John William Patterson; daughter, Amy L. Gourley; four grandchildren, Jennifer Patterson, Thomas Patterson, Dana Gourley, Candy Gourley, all of Greensboro; and one sister, Mary G. Patterson of Las Vegas, Nevada. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the local arrangements.
