Jean J. Merritt

Marengo-Jean Joyce Merritt was born September 3, 1937, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Elwood and Eloene (Davis) Harwell. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1955 and then from the Iowa Teachers College. Jean was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Merritt on June 13,1959. Jean was an Iowa Valley Elementary School teacher. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Marengo. Jean was a member of Tri T and was a Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed traveling, especially wintering in Arizona, cooking, playing Bridge and was an Iowa Hawkeye Fan. Jean died Tuesday, May 21, 2025, at Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo at the age of 87 years.

She is survived by her children Lee Ann (Allan) Mitchler of Elkhart Lake, WI, and Doug Merritt of Marengo; and four grandchildren Allison Mitchler, Kyra Merritt, Alexandra Mitchler and Jenna Merritt. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chuck, brother Jerry, and sister Janice in infancy.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at First United Methodist Church in Marengo. Burial will follow in the Marengo Cemetery. Visitation will be held from Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa Valley Elementary School.
