Jerry D. Hanshaw, 62, of Salem, IA, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at his home. Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, June 3rd, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, June 4th, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel with Chaplain Jim Luder officiating. Burial, with full military rites, will be in the Oakland Mills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jerry Hanshaw Memorial, which will support his children's education. Born February 24, 1948, in Fairfield, IA, Jerry Dean was the son of Albert and Francis Inez Pickering Hanshaw. He was a graduate of Fairfield High School and attended Indian Hills Community College for two years. On September 23, 1989, he married Lynn Henderson at Oakland Mills, IA. Jerry enlisted in the United States Army and served in Viet Nam as part of the 61st and 71st Air Defense Artillery. He worked as a policeman in Washington, IA, for ten years and for the past 22 years was the manager of the Sirloin Stockade in Mt. Pleasant. Jerry retired January 1, 2009. Spending time with family and friends was Jerry's favorite pastime. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #58, Salem Masonic Lodge, and Moose Lodge 1003 in Mt. Pleasant. He was an avid fisherman and was known for making the best prime rib around. Jerry enjoyed camping, boating, and hunting for mushrooms and asparagus. Survivors include his wife, Lynn of Salem, IA; four sons, Jeff (Teresa) Hanshaw of Wellman, IA, and Jerry "J.J." (Wendy) Hanshaw of Spring Lake, NC, and Anthony and Joseph Hanshaw of Salem, IA; four daughters, Joan (Russ) Bean of Kalona, IA, Julie Hanshaw of Benton, MO, Melissa Hanshaw of Iowa City, IA, and Kayla Hanshaw of Salem, IA; two brothers, Jim Hanshaw of Washington, IA and Eugene Hanshaw of Pleasant Plain, IA; and two sisters, Carma Pringle of Brighton, IA and Janet Crosby of Pleasant Plain, IA. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Gretchen Rae Hanshaw, and a brother, Larry Hanshaw.
