Williamsburg - Joann Marie Scoville was born June 26, 1943 in Warsaw, Illinois. The daughter of Walter and Marie (Hoener) Frey, she graduated from Warsaw High School in 1961. Joann received a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in French from Iowa Wesleyan University in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and later obtained a master's degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Iowa.

Joann was united in marriage to Robert Charles Scoville on July 15, 1972 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Warsaw. They lived on a farm in Birmingham, Iowa before moving to a farm near Williamsburg in 1979.

Joann spent her career teaching at several schools including Centerville, Deep River Millersburg, HLV, and spending most of her career in the Williamsburg School District. She was also an active volunteer for Iowa County 4-H for many years and was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame with her husband Bob.

Joann enjoyed taking her horses trail riding on trips with her sister and best friends from childhood. She kept a journal of all of her adventures on the trail rides and some of her journal was published in Trail Rider Magazine in 1997. She was also an active member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church and served on the finance committee for many years.

Joann died on April 7, 2026 at the English Valley Care Center in North English and the age of 82.

She is survived by her son Robert Bennett Scoville and his wife Heather of Ladora, IA; two grandsons, Bobby Scoville and Bennett Scoville; a sister, Joyce (Dennis) McKay of Hamilton, IL; a brother Jack (Deb) Frey of Maquoketa, IA; and a sister-in-law, Janet Frey of Norwalk, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bob, son Dustin, and a brother Kenneth Frey.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am on Monday April 13, 2026, at the Millersburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday April 12, 2026 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for the Millersburg United Methodist Church.
