John I. Schlesselman was born on June 7, 1922 west of Williamsburg, IA, the son of John P. and Emma A. Stohlmann Schlesselman. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Williamsburg where he was a life long member. He attended Pilot Grove School near Williamsburg. John was inducted into the Army in 1943. He transferred to the Army Air Corps, received Cadet Schooling and was commissioned as a Flight Officer. He was a bombardier instructor for a period of time. After receiving additional schooling he was commissioned as a bombardier navigator. John was discharged in October 1945. John was united in marriage to Betty J. DeGraff on November 22, 1944 in Iowa City, IA. After returning from military duty, he spent his life farming in the Williamsburg community. He died following a long series of illnesses on Tuesday, February 8, 2005, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He lived 82 years, 8 months and 1day. He is survived by his wife Betty of Williamsburg; sons Jim Schlesselman of Cedar Rapids, IA; Tom Schlesselman and wife Jan of Freeport, IL; 3 grandchildren: Ben, Amy & Micah Schlesselman. John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Orville, Everette & Dale Schlesselman; and sisters Lenora McCallister & Florence Lortz.
