John L. Maxwell was born December 17, 1920 in Desdemona, Texas the son of John Luther and Virgie (Lindsey) Maxwell. On May 5, 1944 John was united in marriage to Betty Lou Seitsinger in Wichita, KS. John worked for the Cessna Aircraft from 1942-1946 until moving to Wellman working at the Meat Locker Plant from 1946-1955, and then was an agent for Bankers Life Insurance Company until he retried in 1985. John and Betty wintered in Florida and have lived in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids communities since retiring. John died on Monday, May 19, 2014 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha at the age of 93 years. John is survived by his wife Betty Lou and 3 children: Jeff ( Jennifer) Maxwell of Cedar Rapids, Larry Maxwell of Rancho Mirage, CA, and Sheila (Max) Newberry of Fresno, CA. 4 grandchildren Grant Hunter, Colbi, Abby and Parker Maxwell. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers: Lois L, Howard, Forrest and Floyd Maxwell. Celebration of life service will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman with a time of fellowship following the service. Visitation will be held from 2-4 pm Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha.
