John F. Snyder, Ph.D., ABPP, (formally of Carbondale, Il) was born March 29, 1933, in Chicago, Il, to Francis R. and Florence (Aubin) Snyder. He graduated from De La Salle High School in Chicago. John then attended St. Mary’s University in Minnesota where he received his undergraduate degree. Furthering his education, he earned his Ph.D. in psychology at Loyola University. John served in the US Army from 1955-1958 including an assignment in South Korea. In 1968, John was hired as a professor at Southern Illinois University where he built a 39-year career mentoring graduate level students focusing on psychotherapy along with teaching undergraduates about crisis intervention. During his distinguished career, he conducted research and authored numerous papers that were published through the university and the American Psychology Association. On November 9, 1978, John married Susan Glenn, in Carbondale, Illinois where they built a loving 47-year marriage with their blended family.
John was very active throughout his life, enjoying sailing, long distance running and swimming. He loved spending time with his large family including trips to Big Cedar Lodge on Table Rock Lake over a 20-year span. His passion for fishing led to annual fishing trips with his sons and close friends. The highlight of every Wednesday was meeting with his ‘Lunch Bunch’, a small group of colleagues who would frequent local restaurants. John was loving, compassionate and always willing to step in and help someone in need. He was an original volunteer of the annual River to River relay run from the Mississippi to the Ohio River. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a contributing member of the Newman Catholic Student Center at SIUC. During his career, John was a volunteer director for the Red Cross focusing on counseling efforts during natural disasters throughout the United States. His expertise in his field was acknowledged by receiving the Diplomate status from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
John passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, in Homestead, Iowa at the age of 92 years old.John is survived by his wife Susan, six children Kelly (Fred) Wallace, Mike (Sandi) Tripp, Julie (Donavan) Honnold, Michael (Wendy) Snyder, Tom (Mary) Snyder and Ryan (Karrie) Snyder, 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents, brother Tom Snyder and son Greg Tripp. A private family celebration will be held at a later date.
