June Berneice Goschke was born June 1, 1922 near Lockman, Iowa the daughter of Lauryon and Tessie (Evans) Newell. She graduated from Eddyville High School and attended William Penn College and Iowa State Teachers College. She taught rural country school in Monroe County and then at Ladora Public School. On May 29, 1942 she was united in marriage to Amil Gene Goschke in Brownwood, Texas. They moved to Wellman in 1947. In 1949 they purchased the Wellman Advance where June was the feature writer, proof reader and office manager. In 1992 they sold the paper and retired. June was a very active member of the First Baptist Church in Wellman, charter member of the Wellman Heritage Society, Trustee of the Wellman Library for 29 years, Past President of the Wellman Library Board, Past President of TTT, and ALC Club. In 1990 she was named Washington County Outstanding Senior Citizen. She was also very active with Mid-Prairie School activities and she received an Honorary FFA Degree from the Mid-Prairie Chapter. In 1986 she was given Mid-Prairie Education Association's Friend of Education award. June died on Monday, August 9, 2010 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 88 years. June is survived by a son Douglas Goschke and wife Ann of Port St. Lucie, Florida; two daughters - Pamela Goschke and friend Tim Meyer of Amana; Sue Ann Gravert and husband Gary of Albia; a son-in-law Tim Grady of Port St. Lucie, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister Grace Hedges of Englewood, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Gene; a daughter Junean Grady; two brothers - Irvin Newell, Clayton Newell; and two sisters - Lois Miller and Freida Hewitt. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 12, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Wellman. Pastor Mark Larson will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman where the family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for First Baptist Church and Wellman Heritage Society.
