Kathleen JoAnne Calvin was born on June 9, 1930, in Washington County, IA, a daughter of Harry and Bertha Emde Gardner. She graduated from North English High School and attended Ottumwa Heights College for 3 years. On June 22, 1957, Kathleen married Laurence L. Calvin in North English. She taught in rural schools for 2 years and in North English for 5 years. She also worked 8 years at Holden Foundation Seeds in Williamsburg and 16 years at Amana Refrigeration, retiring in 1994. Kathleen attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the North English Community Club. She enjoyed reading, playing cards and spending time at the community center. Kathleen died following an extended illness at her home in North English, on Saturday, May 15, 2004. Kathleen lived 73 years, 11 months and 6 days. She is survived by sons Charles L. Calvin (Alana) of North English, IA; John W. Calvin (Jan) of North English, IA; and a daughter Patricia J. Lehrman ( Daren) of Stanwood, IA; a grandson Brady Lehrman; and brothers: Wayne Gardner of Iowa City, IA; Harry Gardner Jr. & Burrell Gardner both of Toledo, IA; and Francis Gardner of Stoughton, WI. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and husband Laurence in November 1996. Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday May 19, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. David Hitch officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English from 4 PM to 8 PM, with a wake service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Kathleen's name to Hospice of Iowa County.
