Kathryn Marie Slaubaugh was born December 21, 1926 in rural Iowa County, the daughter of Jacob Arthur and Mary Anna (Yoder) Slaubaugh. She graduated from Hesston High School, received her BS degree in education from Goshen College and her MS degree in learning disabilities from the University of Central Arkansas, She taught in rural public and parochial schools in Iowa and Illinois before moving to Arkansas where she lived and taught for 25 years. She returned to Iowa and taught at Pathway Christian School several years before retiring after 37 years of teaching. Kathryn was baptized and became a member of West Union Mennonite Church in 1936. She was also a member of Bethel Springs Mennonite Church in Arkansas. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and served as a Sunday School superintendent. She was involved in Mennonite Women and was active in many other groups, Kalona Lioness Organization, Iowa Mennonite Historical Society, the local Prairie China Painters, Meals on Wheels and volunteered at the World Market Place. She enjoyed travel, arts and crafts, bird watching and letter writing. Kathryn graduated from this earthly life Friday, March 7, 2026 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona at age 99 years.
She is survived by her sister: Helen Lindstrom of Wellman; a sister-in-law: Grace Slaubaugh of Kalona; a nephew: Nathan Lindstrom of Houston, Texas and 4 great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn (Lester) Yoder, brother Marvin D. Slaubaugh, niece Mary Catherine Murray and a nephew Kenton J. Slaubaugh.
A Memorial Service will be 11:00 am, Wednesday, March 11, 2026 at West Union Mennonite Church rural Parnell. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10, 2026 from 4:00-6:00 pm at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) and West Union Mennonite Church. Messages and tributes can be sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
