Wellman- Kenneth D. Kempf was born January 20, 1935 in Wellman, Iowa, the son of Walter J and Alice C (Fuller) Kempf. Kenneth was a 1953 graduate of Wellman High School. He went on to serve as a 1st Lt. in the United States Air Force from 1954 - 1959 piloting F-94C fighter interceptor jets. Kenneth was united in marriage to the love of his life Hila Sue Foster on June 26, 1956 at the Asbury Methodist Church in Wellman. He owned and operated The Wellman DX Service station for 20 years and later worked for the Mid-Prairie Community School District. Kenneth was dedicated to serving the community he lived in. He served on the original Wellman Planning & Zoning Committee, the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, a past president of the Wellman Rotary Club and the Mid Prairie School Board, Wellman city council and Mayor and was named Mid-Prairie Friend of Education 2012. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Kenneth enjoyed spending time in the outdoors hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. He was an artist whose skills and interests crossed many mediums. Other pursuits included antiques and golfing. The greatest joy of his life was simply spending time with his family. At his wish after a lengthy illness, Kenneth died on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at his home in Wellman surrounded by family at the age of 85 years.
He is survived by his wife Sue of Wellman; three children Kenneth B (Angie) Kempf of Wayland, David (Jayme) Kempf of Franklin, WI and Andrew (Bridget) Kempf of Bettendorf; three grandchildren Amber (Kelsey Price) Kempf, Alison (Jesse) Meade and Cole (Angela) Kempf; seven great grandchildren; Hunter, Drake and Zion Price, Maddi Meade and Lane Kempf, Hayley and Caitlyn Yoder; sister Aileen Blades; sisters-in-law Linda Kempf, Sonja Woodham, Laura Vogel and Lizbeth Booth. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Fred and Jay Kempf, brother-in-law Robert Blades, sisters-in-law Lynn Foster and Janice Martin; and fathers & mothers-in-law.
A private family service will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Public visitation will be held on Friday, December 11, 2020 from 12:00-6:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman the family will not be in attendance. Masks and social distancing will be required. Memorials may be given to Washington County Hospice, Mid-Prairie Foundation and Wellman Heritage Society.
