Williamsburg- Laurence (Larry) Frederick August Roehrkasse was born February 5, 1916 in Seward County, Nebraska. The son of Theodore Henry and Ida Johanna Marie Voege Roehrkasse. After his birth the family moved to Wisconsin for a couple of years then to Williamsburg in 1921. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1934. Larry was united in marriage to Marjorie Elizabeth Frick on January 21, 1940 in Macon, Missouri. He served in the U.S Navy in WWII from 1944 to 1946 as a Radar man. He owned and operated Roehrkasse Meat Company for 40 years until retiring July 31, 1978. Larry was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church were he served on the finance board and an Elder. He was also a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 (life member), American Legion (serving as Commander 1947-1948), served on the Williamsburg City Council (4 terms), President of the Iowa Meat Processors Association (1964-1965), past member of the Lions Club (serving 55 years, charter member and served as President) and served as 1st President of the Sport Hill Country Club. Larry died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Cottage Grove Place in Cedar Rapids after a extended illness with Parkinson disease at the age of 88 years. Larry is survived by his wife Marjorie of Cedar Rapids; a daughter- Sharon (Matthew) Kaschmitter of North Liberty; three sons- Larry (Karol) Roehrkasse of Stillwater, Minnesota, John (Nancy) Roehrkasse of Urbandale and Donald (Ann) Roehrkasse of Cedar Rapids. 8 grandchildren: Lisa (Randy) Vogel of Omaha, NE, Mark (Bronda) Kaschmitter of Ogden Utah, Olivia (Jeff) Hornig of Minneapolis MN, Rachel (Mark) Rahn of Edina, MN, Brian Roehrkasse of Washington D.C., Dr. Tracey Roehrkasse of Kansas City, MO, Lt. Eric (Jenn) Roehrkasse of Rapid City, SD, Michael Roehrkasse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 6 great grandchildren- Luke & Elizabeth Kaschmitter, Lleyton Hornig, Alixanderia & Mark Rahn and Rebekah Roehrkasse.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Walter Roehrkasse. Celebration on Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery with Military Rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Officiating will be Pastor Carl Cloeter. Visitation will be Monday, October 4, 2004 from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service. There will be a VFW Service at 7:00p.m.. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of Iowa City. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
