SIGOURNEY-Lee W. Cassens, age 69, of Sigourney, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a brief illness. Lee was born August 16, 1935, near Sigourney, to Ray and Laurella (Van Auken) Cassens. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1953 and served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. On August 24, 1963, he married Peggy Hesseltine in Wayland, Iowa. The couple made their home near Sigourney. In addition to farming, Lee was a dealer of Westfield Augers, boats and motors and seed corn. Lee served as chairperson of the Democratic Central Committee and the Cattlemen's Association, and as a director of the Midwest Christian Ashram. He also was a F.A.A. certified private pilot and a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church, where he served on the church board and Sunday school teacher, Keokuk County Conservation Board, Isaak Walton League. He coached little league baseball and enjoyed flying, scuba diving and hunting. Survivors include his wife: Peggy of Sigourney; three children: Bret Allen Cassens of Sigourney, Damon Douglas Cassens and wife Tina of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Molly Ann Cassens and husband Filipe Navesse of Fairfield; five grandchildren: Jacob, Jessie, Chloe, Brooklynn and Kobe and one sister: Jean Cavin and husband James of Sigourney. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2005, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the Sigourney United Methodist Church and the Crisis Center.
