Leonard N. Bayliss was born July 20, 1916 near Keota, Iowa the son of Tom and Theresa (Hammen) Bayliss. He attended the St. Mary grade school and high school in Keota and was an active member of the Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary Catholic Church. He served in the United States Air Force during WWII from 1942-1946 with overseas duty in the China Burma India Theater. On March 26, 1946 he was united in marriage to Rosella Sieren at the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church near Harper. He has lived all of his life in the Keota community where he was a farmer and he worked part time as a field assessor for Keokuk County. He was a member of the Keokuk County Extension Council and 4H leader, Soil Conservation Commissioner, and a ASCS field and committee member. He loved his family and farming, especially taking care of cattle. Leonard died on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at the Sigourney Care Center in Sigourney at the age of 88 years. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for more than 20 years and became a resident of the Sigourney Care Center in October of 2003. Leonard is survived by his wife Rosella of Keota; 8 children - Joyce Cherne and husband Vernon of Guttenberg; Richard Bayliss and wife Cyndy of Ottumwa; Rosemary Hasenmiller and husband David of Bettendorf; Thomas Bayliss of Riverside; Donald Bayliss and wife Renita of Wellman; Gary Bayliss and wife Joen of Keota; Janet Jacobs and husband Paul of Ottumwa; Carol Jacobsen and husband Chris of Pine, Colorado; 20 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a brother - Clarence of Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson Michael Bayliss; and a sister Christina Bohr.
