SIGOURNEY-Mary Baird, age 89, of Sigourney, died Monday, May 18, 2026, at her home.

Mary was born February 12, 1937, in Farson, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Dora (Schimmelpfennig) Carter and graduated from Hedrick High School in 1955. On June 19, 1955, she married Jerold “Pete” Baird at the Hedrick Christian Church. The couple lived in Sigourney where Mary was a Dietetic Assistant at the Keokuk County Health Center for 38 years, retiring in 1998. She was a member of the Delta Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting, baking, her pets, her grandchildren and great granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband: Pete of Sigourney; two sons: Tom (Cherrie) Baird of North English and Bill Baird of Webster; daughter: Shelly (Kirk Holeton) Westfall of South English; five grandchildren: Jeremy (Markie) Baird of Des Moines, Taylor (Beth) Baird of Cedar Rapids, Ben (Amy) Baird of Millersburg, Holdon Westfall of Sigourney and Sadie (Logan) Shepherd of Williamsburg; one great granddaughter: Shelby Baird of Des Moines and sister-in-law: Pat Carter of Sigourney. She was preceded in death by her parents; son-in-law: Larry Lynn Westfall; daughter-in-law: Sandy Baird; brother: Bill Carter and two grandchildren: Joey Baird and Bryant Westfall.

Memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney. Burial will be at a later date at Garrett Cemetery near Delta.  There will be no service.

A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Mary and her family. Tributes may be made at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
