Maurice (Butch) Toomer Jr.

Kinross- Maurice (Butch) Toomer Jr. passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 29, 2022. Maurice was born July 9, 1948 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Maurice and Opal (Nix) Toomer. He grew up in rural Lone Tree, Iowa, attending Lone Tree High School.

Maurice worked for Kalona Plastics for several years and accepted a position at LL Pelling following his retirement. Prior to these positions he worked for his dad’s taxicab business. He lived in the Wellman/Kinross area much of his adult life.

One of Maurice’s favorite past-times was going fishing with his brother, especially their annual fishing trips to Sabula. He was very mechanically inclined and enjoyed working on cars.

Maurice is survived by four sisters: Sharon Elder of Iowa City, Joyce Thomas of Iowa City, Bev Sherwood of Maquoketa, and Brenda (Denny) Gritsch of Iowa City. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice Toomer Sr. and Opal (Nix) Toomer, and a brother, David Toomer.

Visitation will be held from11:00 am -1:00 pm on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman, Iowa, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Little Creek Cemetery, Kinross.
