Michael Okones

DES MOINES-Michael Okones, age 31, of Des Moines, formerly of Sigourney, died Saturday, April 9, 2022, at his home.
    Michael was born August 24, 1990, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, to Lance and Tracy (Bird) Okones.  At the age of 13, he was baptized at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids.  Michael graduated from Sigourney High School in 2008.  Michael was a car salesman before becoming an insurance agent for Nationwide and then State Farm.  On June 7, 2018, he married Sara Schmidt in Des Moines.  He was a talented artist, musician and beer connoisseur, Tom Brady fanatic and enjoyed golfing.  
    Survivors include his wife: Sara and daughter: Hazel of Des Moines; parents: Lance and Tracy Okones of Sigourney; siblings: Tasha (Michael) Shaw of Albia, Andrew (Gabrielle) Okones of Sigourney, Leasha (Tucker) Rasplicka of What Cheer and Teara (Alex) Holt of New Providence; many nieces and nephews and grandparents: Lee and Glenda Okones of Sigourney.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Harold and Hazel Bird.

    Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2022, at Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney, with Pastor Billy Claywell officiating.  Cremation will follow the service.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at Powell Funeral Home in Sigourney.
