KEOTA-Ned Gingerich, age 82, of Keota, died Saturday, May 29, 2004, at his residence following a lengthy illness. Ned was born May 26, 1922, near Kalona, Iowa, to Samuel "Jesse" and Lydia (Plank) Gingerich. He attended rural Pleasant Hill school near Kalona and graduated from Kalona High School in 1939. In September of 1942, Ned enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in the Air Cadet program until the end of WWII. Following his discharge, Ned worked at a cabinetry company. On May 22, 1951, he married Rose Reiland Dawson in Kahoka, Missouri. The couple farmed in the Keota area for many years and Ned also worked at the SEMCO Landfill as a scale man for several years. Ned was a member of the Am-Vets Post #107 in Richmond, was very active with the Boy Scouts for several years and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed camping, training hunting dogs and following Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball. Survivors include one son: James and wife Peggy of Keota; granddaughters: Jennifer and Jamie; two step-sons: Tom Dawson and wife Carol of Newburg, Indiana and Steve Dawson and wife Karen of Iowa City; one step-daughter: Barbara Riggan and husband Bill of Kalona; 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Rose in 1997; two brothers: Vernon and Harlen; two sisters: Edith Brenneman and Irma Briskey and one step-son: Bill Dawson. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Keota Cemetery, with military rites by the Richmond Am-Vets Post # 107. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
