Kalona-Omer Douglas Goodner was born February 19, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Homer and Helen (Hannah) Goodner. He served in the United States Army during Vietnam from 1967-1969. He earned a BA in English Literature in 1972, and earned his Masters in Comparative Literature at the University of Iowa. Doug was united in marriage to Susan Ross on August 13, 1977 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier Church in Dyersville, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with twin sons. They later divorced. Dour worked 33 years at Job Services Of Iowa in Iowa City, retiring in 2010. He moved to Pleasantview Home in Kalona in 2012, which he said was "one of the best decisions he ever made." Doug served as a lector at St. Mary Catholic Church in Iowa City for 14 years and at the Holy Trinity in Richmond for a number of years. He loved to walk outdoors, read books, and participate in book discussions at the Kalona Public Library and Pleasantview Home. Doug passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 28, 2022 at his home at the age of 74.
He is survived by his sons, David (Emily) Goodner of Iowa City and Joseph (Theresa) Goodner of Denver, CO; 4 grandchildren, Henry, Margaret, Amalia and Genevieve; his former wife, Susan Goodner; a sister, Diane Rivera of Bloomington, IN; 3 brothers, Steve (Deb) Goodner of Ankeny, Tom Goodner of Smyrna, TN and Brian (Dianne) Goodner of West Des Moines and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law Benito Rivera.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 am on Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time. Burial will be at Sharon Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for Pleasantview Home or Hospice of Washington County. Service will be live streamed on www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
