Pat Michael Akery, age 67, of Brooklyn, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2017, at Unity Point Health in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn, with Pastor Hans Cornelder officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklyn Cemetery. Visitation for Pat Akery will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday, October 2, 2017 at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, Iowa and will continue for an hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be given in Pat Akery’s name to the family.
Pat is survived by his wife Jackie; a son Scott (Lisa) Akery of Palm Coast, FL; a daughter Carrie (Wade) Scarbrough of Deltona, FL; and six grandchildren, Emma, Carl, and Vann Simpkins, Evan, Kelly, and Leah Akery. Also surviving are a brother Richard “Butch” Akery, and two sisters Linda Davis and Carole Van Tomme. Pat was preceded in death by his parents, a son Dan Akery and a brother in infancy.
Pat Michael Akery was born November 13, 1949, in Grinnell, Iowa, the son of Dan and Verna Williams Akery. He graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1968. He and Jacqueline Duncan were married July 17, 1971 at the Methodist Church in Grinnell. Pat was employed by the Rock Island Railroad and the Iowa Interstate Railroad on the maintenance crew, most recently as the foreman, before retiring in 1999.
Pat was an avid trapper, fisher, hunter and outdoorsman. He had favorite “top-secret” trapping and fishing spots all around the Brooklyn area. He loved birds, especially game birds, pigeons and peacocks. He supported the replenishment program for pheasants in Iowa, and has planted numerous trees and shrubs to attract a variety birds at his home.
